The Two-th of May

I've always liked this day. First of all, here in the somewhat-temperate zone it means that spring is actually starting. It also is post May-Day. I've never been a May-Day fan.
I mean, look at the facts:
-May-Day is the first of May, but does anyone know what it celebrates?
-May-Day conjures thoughts of small Scandinavians pivoting around poles... not American anything
-Somehow May-Day became a term used by sinking ships (& other marine mishaps). Obviously nautical society wouldn't categorize that as a "good thing"
-The only other First-Of-The-Month holiday is also for the first of the year... and is in fact celebrated the day prior to
-But, the largest reason is simply that it demonstrates American ignorance in its prime.

First of all, realize that I am not judging people poorly for being ignorant. After all, anyone who knows anything about May-Day would realize rather quickly that I fall in the category of the ignorant. But, I don't celebrate May-Day (because I like to keep my ignorance to myself... or at least save it up to write a blog about ;) ). I just find American ignorance amusing. However, it is quite likely that it is our ignorance that made America such a great place to live.
Think about it, we are one of the melding pots of the world and we have received into our bosom cultures from all over the world. When this happens in a country, the country often accepts pieces of the culture. We just chose the best parts. The French chose art, the Japanese chose technology, but we chose holidays. I don't know who was responsible for the choice, but they should have their own holiday (I'd suggest sometime in August, because it really lacks decent holidays).
So, happy May-Day yesterday, have a nice cinco de mayo in 3 days, and I hope you had a nice Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day, and any other day you'd like to celebrate.
      -Rob

  • Call me captain obvous, but has anybody else noticed people are always looking for an excuse to celebrate something? "We got fired, let's celebrate." "We have high gas prices, let's celebrate" The cubs won a game, let's celebrate.

Any excuse to take your mind off anything important is good enough for the average joe.
